On Inauguration Day, one CBS reporter called the progression of President Obama’s life, “a lesson about aspiring to the greatest heights.” Hope is the word of the week. My colleague Viki, a former elected official who Colorado Governor Dick Lamm asked to serve in the General Assembly three decades ago, says our collective hope as Americans has been restored. I’m with her. And I add that each of us has the responsibility to give hope legs—in work boots—to walk on. As President Obama said in his inaugural speech, “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” Those are words demanding action. They resonate with every cowgirl ever thrown from a horse, every businesswoman who lost the day, every researcher who lost her funding. You learn. You smart and you are smarter. You start again.
To every girl on the planet, those wearing the first Pretty Brainy apparel we created in 2008 and those about to be Pretty Brainy girls, we say—
“You Have a Heroic Mission. You were born with it. Pay attention to what you love to do and to the things that make you happy. These will help you realize what you, and no one but you, can accomplish.”
In an era of global crises, the contributions of every future leader and thinker are needed. Girls and the energy they generate, the biggest thoughts they think and the greatest heights to which they aspire, are the reason we created Pretty Brainy. Being capable and being a girl are wildly compatible.
To take today’s national thinking one step further, the team at Pretty Brainy never stopped creating at the idea of being hopeful: we know the capabilities of girls—your daughter, your granddaughter, your sister, niece, friend, student—are part of the energy that will help Americans continue to stand tall well beyond Inauguration Week 2009.
